Metal roof leaks
Fasteners, washers and seams
Tarping is what happens when a roof cannot be made permanently watertight the same day — wrong weather, materials that need temperature to bond, or damage too extensive to repair before the next rain. A properly anchored tarp buys weeks. A weighted one blows off in the next storm and takes shingles with it. The difference is whether it is fastened into sound structure above the damage and run far enough up the slope that water cannot get behind it.
Wapella gets the full range — freeze-thaw cycling through winter, severe convective storms with hail and straight-line wind in spring and summer, and enough temperature swing between them to work every joint on the roof loose. Freeze-thaw is the quiet one: water finds a hairline gap in flashing, freezes overnight, expands, and opens it slightly wider, repeating through a De Witt County winter until a joint that was watertight in October is leaking by March. Spring brings the loud damage, and derechos have put straight-line wind through this region at speeds that take ridge caps and whole shingle courses. Housing stock here is older than average, which means a lot of roofs where the flashing has already been through several decades of that cycle.
Wapella has a population of about 513, and the housing stock here sets the pattern for what fails first on a roof.
A properly anchored one holds for weeks to a few months depending on exposure and UV. It is a bridge to the repair, not a solution — the material degrades and the fixings work loose.
Correctly installed, no. Badly installed, yes — weighted tarps shift and abrade shingles, and fixings driven into the field of the roof create the exact holes you are trying to cover. Anchoring goes into sound structure above the damaged area.
